My work is inspired by the Gothic paintings of Europe and their joyful celebration of an elevated reality. I aspire to their luminous palettes enhanced with the elegance of gold and copper leaf. My imagery is a celebration of the timeless joys of gardens, meadows, birdsong and afternoon tea.
Following her degree Marcelle taught art for many years in Devon, Surrey, Jersey and Bath, but now works full time in her studio in Devon. Her paintings are all on carefully prepared gesso panels, painted in egg tempera - pure pigments mixed with organic egg yolks - and over painted in oils. Marcelle's attention to detail is superb and her use of imagery creates paintings which capture moments in time, real and imagined, often featuring beloved animals and birds from folklore.
