Karen Popham

"My paintings are an attempt to share with others my response to the subject I am painting. For me, the most vital thing is that I recognise that response, and understand my reason for wanting to paint it .Then the task is to visually create a space beyond the window in which to portray my intention .This can often be as simple as celebrating the beauty of something. Whether it is a still life, a portrait, landscape, seascape or interior, the point is to tell a story and create an atmosphere."

Karen Popham has painted professionally since completing a degree in Fine Art at Central St Martins in 1979.

Her work has hung in numerous public exhibitions including the Royal Academy, the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Western Academy, Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Mall Galleries ( 2024  prize winner) as well as in several one man shows of her own.

Whilst regarding herself principally an oil painter, Karen has worked as an illustrator and muralist. She was Artist in Residence to the Reform Club in Pall, the Laban Ballet School and the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, for whom she illustrated two books - the Mud Maid and The Giant.

Karen is a well regarded teacher and has recently returned to the West Country where she has a studio in Buckfastleigh and occasionally teaches at Salcombe Art Club. She is an active member of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts.
